What is a Dental Crown?
When a tooth structure is damaged or severely decayed, but the tooth root is healthy and intact, we may recommend a dental crown to restore the tooth. A dental crown is a tooth-colored cap that is permanently placed over the tooth. Dental crowns are not only used to restore a decayed tooth, but it is also used to complete a dental implant or bridge procedure. A dental crown may also be recommended to:
- Cover a tooth after a root canal
- Repair teeth with excessive wear
- Cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored
- Replace a tooth with a large filling
- Add strength to a tooth with little tooth structure remaining
- Fix a cracked tooth
Procedure Details
A dental crown procedure is typically completed in two office visits. During the first visit, we will remove any decay, shape the tooth to the proper size, take an impression of your teeth, and fit a temporary crown. The permanent crown needs to be created and during your second visit the permanent crown is placed in your mouth. We ensure a proper and comfortable fit and bite before you leave.
If we recommended a dental crown during your last visit, we encourage you to call our office located in Phoenix, AZ to schedule an appointment. Delaying a needed treatment can result in more extensive treatments and additional costs. We want to help restore the function of your teeth and get your oral health back on track.
