Dental Crowns: A Versatile Treatment
Your teeth are constantly working for you and, due to normal wear and tear, dental conditions such as tooth decay, chipped or cracked teeth, loose fillings, and more naturally occur. Thanks to dental crowns, we can help prevent further damage and restore the strength of your tooth so you don’t have to lose it. We perform dental crown treatments in order to:
- Protect a weak tooth from breaking
- Restore a tooth that has been worn down
- Cover a tooth that is weakened by a large filling
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
- Protect a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment
Dental crowns are extremely durable, can last up to15 years, and have one of the highest dental treatment success rates. What’s more, crowns look and function just like your natural teeth. They are made to match the shade of your natural teeth, and with a crown, you can eat whatever you like.
Crowns are also used for cosmetic purposes, whether to enhance the shape of a tooth or cover a tooth that is stained and doesn’t respond to teeth whitening treatments.
The Dental Crown Procedure
A dental crown treatment is accomplished in two dental visits. During the first visit, we shape the tooth that will receive the crown so as to make room for the restoration. An impression of the tooth is then made and sent to a lab where it is custom made just for you. In the meantime, you will be fitted with a temporary crown.
On your second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent crown to the tooth using a strong adhesive. We will check to make sure it fits properly, and you’ll be able to use your new and improved tooth right after you leave the office.
